Meet Harper

This is Harper, our energetic lab/shepard mix. Her favorite thing to do is run is the woods which is what she was doing when she was shot on Thursday, 12/9 on the trails of Holcomb Farm in Granby CT where we live. Luckily, we found her in time to rush her to Salmon Brook Veterinary Hospital - Home where it was touch and go for a few hours but they were able stabilize her so we could transport her to Connecticut Veterinary Center in West Hartford. Upon arrival, Harper was given a blood transfusion and received constant care. Did you know that your dog can be a blood donor? A wonderful vet surgeon performed surgery on Fri morning and saved her life. He had to clean her up form the bullet passing through and remove part of one lung. There is a blood clot on her liver that we hope does not cause any problems in the future. She came home the following Sunday and is resting comfortably. She is pretty banged up after suffering a lot of internal bleeding but we are hopeful she will make a full recovery. We would like to thank the fantastic staff at Salmon Brook Animal Hospital and CT Veterinary Center for their care and love during her time there.

Harper has come a long way since we found her in the woods a week ago. She had no desire to go outside upon coming home from the hospital which posed a problem with the bathroom routine. She was going to the bathroom once a day but this morning we walked up the street like normal - It was huge. Her morphine patch came off yesterday and her personality is back today. She is back to chasing our cat autumn around the house.....Autumn is back in hiding.
