Meet Harper

This is Harper, our energetic lab/shepard mix. Her favorite thing to do is run is the woods which is what she was doing when she was shot on Thursday, 12/9 on the trails of Holcomb Farm in Granby CT where we live. Luckily, we found her in time to rush her to Salmon Brook Veterinary Hospital - Home where it was touch and go for a few hours but they were able stabilize her so we could transport her to Connecticut Veterinary Center in West Hartford. Upon arrival, Harper was given a blood transfusion and received constant care. Did you know that your dog can be a blood donor? A wonderful vet surgeon performed surgery on Fri morning and saved her life. He had to clean her up form the bullet passing through and remove part of one lung. There is a blood clot on her liver that we hope does not cause any problems in the future. She came home the following Sunday and is resting comfortably. She is pretty banged up after suffering a lot of internal bleeding but we are hopeful she will make a full recovery. We would like to thank the fantastic staff at Salmon Brook Animal Hospital and CT Veterinary Center for their care and love during her time there.

Update

Harper has come a long way since we found her severely wounded in the woods a week ago. She had no deisre to go outside upon coming home from the hospital which posed a problem with her bathroom routine. She was going to the bathroom once a day but yesterday morning we walked up the street like normal - it was huge. Her morphine patch came off yesterday and her personality is back to normal. Tom and I consider ourselves very lucky. Having her almost back to normal is a great Christmas present.

  4. Kara and Tom,
I was horrified to read Harper's story on WFSB.com, but very happy that she is returning to normal and should make a full recovery. She is a beautiful dog and I wish the best for all three of you.

  5. I wonder HOW dog was separated from owners? People, please ,please obey the dogs must be on lease signs. There is a reason for those signs and your gentle dog is not special so even you must obey the rules.

  6. Harper is in our prayers. I have always disliked hunting. There are so many accidents because the hunters seem to shoot at everything.

  7. So sorry to hear of this terrible accident. Has there been any attempt at finding the person who shot her? Surely they must know what they did. After all, wouldn't they have come to retrieve their target? By the way, on your side bar you advise to hunt only where prohibited. Are you sure you don't mean hunt only where allowed?

  9. Glad the dog is ok...very lucky. But I'm not sure I would be walking a brown and tan dog in/near any woods this time of year.

  10. Harper, i hope you have renewed your lease(what!?) and your owners can take you to a place where hunting is not allowed and you should not have to worry about hunting and oh WAIT! you were! I wish you a very merry christmas! tell your parents you deserve some extra food on xmas.. :) get well soon!!
    Sincerely,
    Donnie Swider
P.S. Granby is a small town and you know this person will eventually talk. And maybe this person does feel horrible after he/she realized it was a dog and was to scared to come forward? I just hope this was by accident and someone is not that cruel.

  11. Man, that sucks. Glad Harper is doing better. I border a state forest where hunting is allowed, and own a brown dog like Harper. Very scary. Harper should HAVE never been in someones gun sight as it is a DOG, not a deer; very obvious. Best of luck on the recovery.

  12. Some Hunters shoot dogs that are not their hunting dogs because the unleashed pet dogs scare the game (deers) away. Sad but TRUE.

I read that Harper's favorite thing to do was run in the woods and that makes me think the owners let Hunter run at will unleashed, not that the dog escaped from the leash as they were walking the trail. Not a save thing to ever do on public trails. I hope Harper is well on his way to recovery.

  13. Glad to hear she is improving. The morphine patch tends to knock them out. Now that it's off, just don't let her tear the stitches.
I have 3 rescue dogs and live on Reed Hill Rd. Don't know which part of Holcomb you were hiking, but the yellow and blue trails on the east end run along a 66 acre property that is privately owned. My sons and I have hiked through it and found a tree stand on two different occasions. In February of 2009, it was very close to the blue and yellow trails. This summer we found it further down hill away from Holcomb trails, closer to our backyards. We hear the gunshots now and then. We also noticed reflective markers that lead to the tree stand from the main trail on this property, I assume so it can be found at night.
Feel free to pass this on as you may be in contact with police and animal control regularly.

  14. So sorry to hear about Harper. But this time a year is horrible to walk a dog of that color and size in the woods off leash. I am sure this was never an intentional thing done by whomever did this. Hope she has a fast recovery and take it as a lesson learned for the future. Hiking and hunting are fun hobbies for some parties but both have safety precautions that should be taken. Good luck with her recovery!
