Meet Harper

This is Harper, our energetic lab/shepard mix. Her favorite thing to do is run is the woods which is what she was doing when she was shot on Thursday, 12/9 on the trails of Holcomb Farm in Granby CT where we live. Luckily, we found her in time to rush her to Salmon Brook Veterinary Hospital - Home where it was touch and go for a few hours but they were able stabilize her so we could transport her to Connecticut Veterinary Center in West Hartford. Upon arrival, Harper was given a blood transfusion and received constant care. Did you know that your dog can be a blood donor? A wonderful vet surgeon performed surgery on Fri morning and saved her life. He had to clean her up form the bullet passing through and remove part of one lung. There is a blood clot on her liver that we hope does not cause any problems in the future. She came home the following Sunday and is resting comfortably. She is pretty banged up after suffering a lot of internal bleeding but we are hopeful she will make a full recovery. We would like to thank the fantastic staff at Salmon Brook Animal Hospital and CT Veterinary Center for their care and love during her time there.

Thank you!

Wow, we are overwhelmed with the kind, loving thoughts and support for Harper. We want to thank the media that covered our story - NBC Channel 30, WFSB Channel 3, The Hartford Courant, The Granby  Patch web site, The Granby News newspaper, The Valley News newspaper and to our friend Darren Sweeney, Meteorologist on NBC Channel 30 who will be covering Harper's story on air and on his
Facebook page. Thank you!

Some of you have asked if they have found the person who shot her - they have not yet. The Granby Animal Control and Granby Police Department is working hard to find the responsible party. We thank them for their efforts. I hope with all the news coverage that person knows that they shot a dog. Hopefully they have enough compassion to step forward.

Harper was off leash while we were hiking. She is a very high energy, agile dog that lives to lives to sniff and explore off leash. There are no signs posted in Holcomb Farms that ask the public to keep dogs leashed. It is a great, quiet place where we always bump into very friendly dogs and hikers. I would like to preface this by stating that we are not sure if this was a hunting incident - until last Thursday I did not know anything about hunting, I assumed that it was not something I had to worry about while hiking on town trails. I may have been way off on this. One of the big reasons we decided to publicize this incident is get the attention of other people out there like me that are unfamiliar with hunting to research the places in your area where hunting is allowed and the seasons and to take extra precautions yourself, along with your family and your pets. I heard an awful story this week about a family with two young children in upstate NY that had a stray bullet from a hunter come through their kitchen window -  Frightening!

I have lots of of doogie treat orders to fill. Thank you all and keep them coming!

Harper has come a long way since we found her in the woods a week ago. She had no desire to go outside upon coming home from the hospital which posed a problem with the bathroom routine. She was going to the bathroom once a day but this morning we walked up the street like normal - It was huge. Her morphine patch came off yesterday and her personality is back today. She is back to chasing our cat autumn around the house.....Autumn is back in hiding.
